Style Interview: Jess Watson, Owner of The Shop. in Laguna Beach

Southern California is the origin and influence of much of the beach style that spreads out around the world. Local designers and boutique owners here play a big roll in shaping the upcoming trends. I had a chance to catch up with Jess Watson, the owner of a very popular Laguna Beach boutique called The Shop., to ask her a few questions. The Shop carries swimwear, women’s clothes (and some cool baby clothes!),  cool gifts and accessories from popular brands like Acacia, L Space, Amuse, Nightcap, Indah, Novella Royale, For Love and Lemons, Cleobella, Ruby Mint, Children of the Tribe, and more. Here’s what she had to say:

N- When did you start the Shop, and how would you describe the overall vibe/ style of it?

Jess- The Shop., was created in Dec 2012 and we opened in March of 2013! The overall vibe is beach bohemian at its finest. I felt a need in Laguna for something that suited the Laguna girl. Growing up in town I never felt like I could go to one store and get exactly what I wanted. The Shop., is the essence of the beach lifestyle. It’s for the free spirited beach girl. It’s about community. A place where the surf vibes live….Some home, some fashion and a little bit of salty-ness.

N- Where do you find inspiration for the upcoming fashion trends?

Jess- A few years ago I would have said magazines, now I say social media. There are so many creative online outlets now such as pinterest and obviously instagram where you can follow fashionable people or unique brands and get inspiration.

N- What is your personal style?

Jess- My personal style is bohemian with an edge. I always have some bohemian flair, even if I’m feeling preppy I mix in a chunky turquoise piece or a fun cuff.

JessWatsonN- How do balance being a successful business owner and mama?

Jess- Well the mama thing is new, so I’m just trying to figure how to manage both. I will say I have a great TEAM. I owe my last 3 months to them for sure! Being a business women is tough, but nothing is harder then being a mom, hardest job in the world. But she’s worth it!

N- Favorite part of being a mama?

Jess- Seeing that amazing smile when she wakes up. Also, seeing my husband with my little girl, melts my heart.

N- Favorite beach?
Jess- So hard! So many good ones. But I’d have to say…9th street. I grew up on that beach, it’s definitely a fave!

N- Favorite spot/ spots in Laguna?

Jess- I really love the blocks where the shop is, something local and familiar about those blocks. Grabbing a beer or a MARGI at any of the local joints or just standing at the deck at brooks st makes me feel at peace.

N- Favorite place to travel?

Jess- Oh man. I’d have to say PAXOS, GREECE aboard our best buds old sailboat island hopping. Most magical and beautiful place.

N- Next on the bucket list?

I want to do a Europe trip, I’ve never been to Spain or Portugal I am dying to go. ALSO Bali, I have to get there.
